His mother Jody, played by Valerie Bertinelli, is in a relationship with another woman. His grandmother Nancy, played by Vanessa Redgrave, is totally appalled by and opposed to this lifestyle and does not want her grandson living in this home. She does her very best to gain custody of her grandson, suing her own daughter for custody. Both women love the boy and it is a battle in the courts to determine who should have custody of the child.
