Ep 11. Christy Martin - The Fight of Her Life

Christy Martin was once the most successful female boxer in the world, known as the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” because of her humble roots in rural West Virginia. She became a household name in the 1990s, winning 49 of her 56 fights and becoming the first female boxer to sign with Don King Promotions. But her fame came with a price. In the early 2010s, her husband and trainer James Martin began abusing her, both physically and emotionally. Despite the abuse, Christy continued fighting, until one night in 2010 when James viciously attacked her with a knife, leaving her for dead. Miraculously, Christy survived, and has spent the past decade fighting to regain her health and find justice for what happened to her.

In this episode of 48 Hours, correspondents Erin Moriarty speaks with Christy and others close to the case about the abuse she suffered and the long road to recovery. Christy recounts the night of the attack, when James lured her into their home and stabbed her numerous times before leaving her for dead. She describes the mental and physical toll the attack took on her, and how difficult it was to rebuild her life after such a traumatic event.
