When it comes to living off the land, the Kilchers of Alaska's Last Frontier know that nothing is guaranteed. In season 5 episode 9, titled "No Rain, Big Pain," the family faces yet another harsh reality of life in the remote wilderness of Alaska - a prolonged drought that threatens their crops and means there's not enough water for their livestock. Without their gardens and livestock, the Kilchers will struggle to survive the long winter ahead.

The episode opens with Atz Lee setting out to check on the family's fishing weir. The weir is an essential source of food for the family, but with no rain in sight, the water levels in the creek have dropped significantly, leaving the salmon struggling to make their way upstream. Atz Lee is concerned that they won't catch enough fish to sustain the family through the winter. Meanwhile, Atz Sr. and Jane are hard at work on their garden, trying to keep their crops alive despite the lack of rain. They've been hauling water from a nearby stream and using it to irrigate their plants, but it's a never-ending task and they're starting to feel the strain.

As the drought continues, tensions mount within the family. Atz Lee's wife, Jewel, is frustrated with their living situation and feeling the strain of having to boil water constantly just to keep their family hydrated. She worries for their children and their future in such a harsh environment. Meanwhile, Atz Lee himself is feeling the weight of responsibility as he tries to provide for his family and keep them safe.

Despite the challenges, the Kilchers persevere. Atz Sr. and Jane come up with a plan to collect rainwater from the roof of their cabin using a system of gutters and barrels. It's a small victory, but it brings some relief to the family and gives them hope that they can withstand the drought. Atz Lee and his brother Eivin also come up with a creative solution to the fishing problem, using a homemade weir to catch more fish in the shallow creek. It's hard work, but it pays off, and the family is able to stockpile enough fish for the winter.

Of course, life in the wilderness is never without its dangers. At one point, Jane encounters a black bear while out checking their garden. The bear is aggressive and unafraid, and Jane is forced to retreat to safety. The encounter serves as a reminder that even when things are going well, the Kilchers are always at the mercy of the unpredictable wilderness around them.

As the season draws to a close, the Kilchers reflect on the challenges they've faced and the lessons they've learned. Living off the land is a difficult and rewarding way of life, but it requires constant vigilance and adaptation. With the drought behind them and winter approaching, the Kilchers are prepared for whatever comes next. They may be Alaska's last frontier, but they know they're never truly alone as long as they have each other and their unbreakable spirit of perseverance.
