In season 3 episode 9 of Ally McBeal, titled "Out in the Cold," the gang at Cage & Fish prepares for the impending winter weather. Ally worries about the cold, and quickly realizes that the coat she ordered online is far too tight. Meanwhile, Ling decides to take advantage of the cold weather by dressing in her fur coat, much to the chagrin of the other lawyers. As they get settled in for the day, Elaine complains about never getting a date, and Richard suggests that she try online dating.

As the day goes on, the lawyers at Cage & Fish work on their various cases. Richard represents a man who believes he was fired because of his age, but soon discovers that there is another reason for his termination. Meanwhile, Ally takes on a case where a woman is seeking damages after she slipped and fell on a patch of ice outside of a restaurant. While the case initially seems straightforward, Ally soon discovers that the woman may not be as innocent as she seems.

As the day continues, the weather outside gets colder and colder. Ling tries to convince Ally to purchase a more fashionable coat, but Ally is too focused on her case to pay attention to Ling's fashion advice. While Ally works on her case, the rest of the firm tries to stay warm. John Cage even brings in a space heater to heat up his office, despite the fact that it's a fire hazard.

As the day draws to a close, Ally gets a surprise visit from Billy. While the pair try to maintain some distance, the chemistry between them is clear. However, the moment is cut short when Ally receives a call from her client. After listening to a voicemail message from the restaurant, Ally realizes that her client may be lying about the extent of her injuries. She confronts her client, who admits that she lied about her injuries to get a bigger settlement.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Ally facing a decision about what to do in light of her client's confession. Meanwhile, the lawyers at Cage & Fish continue to brave the cold weather while John Cage indulges in his passion for karaoke. Overall, "Out in the Cold" is a typical episode of Ally McBeal, with a mix of humor, drama, and romance.
