In the season 1 episode 17 of "American Housewife" titled "Other People's Marriages," we see Katie Otto (played by Katy Mixon) struggling to confront the fact that her friend Angela's (played by Carly Craig) unhappy marriage has finally led to a divorce. From the beginning of the episode, Katie is skeptical about everything that Angela's husband Bill (played by Joshua Malina) does and is convinced that he is going to leave her. She's not wrong.
The episode then takes us through a series of flashbacks into the lives of various couples living in the wealthy Westport, Connecticut neighborhood of this small-town sitcom. One couple is a rich stay-at-home mom and her charismatic husband, who has a serious shopping addiction. Another couple is in the middle of a messy divorce; the husband is still holding on to hope, while the wife just wants to move on. Meanwhile, Katie's older couple friends, Anna-Kat's preschool teacher and her pilot husband, decide to spice up their marriage by using sex toys.
The funniest part of the episode comes when Katie walks in on her husband Greg (played by Diedrich Bader) using one of the sex toys that he found in their friends' kitchen. It's not their fault, they say, that they don't have the money to buy fancy sex toys for themselves; they have to rely on their wealthy friends to provide the entertainment.
But Katie's own marriage is shaky too. She and Greg have been married for years, and with three children, their love life has gotten pretty stale. Katie finds herself looking for excitement in all the wrong places, like trying to outdo the neighbors and their extravagant vacations. She realizes that she's been taking Greg for granted and decides to do something extra special for him, but he misunderstands her efforts as a ploy to network with his boss.
Through all these couples and their problems, Katie is trying to learn a lesson about the value of communication and trust in a marriage. She wants Angela to understand that her marriage problems aren't just because of one person's mistake, but are more about a break down of communication between both parties.
In typical "American Housewife" fashion, the episode is full of humor and charm. It highlights the different directions marriage can take and the importance of open communication to keep love fresh and strong. By the end of the episode, we see Katie and Greg make up, Angela start to accept her new life as a single woman, and the other couples continue to navigate the highs and lows of married life.
