Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown season 12 episode 1 explores the beautiful country of Kenya. Bourdain takes the viewers on a captivating journey through Kenya's rich culture and diverse landscape. The episode starts with Bourdain landing in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. He visits a local market where he indulges in a variety of African spices and cuisines, starting his expedition on the right note.

Bourdain gets to learn about the political and historical aspect of the country when he visits the Rift Valley, which has a diverse population. He talks to locals about the impact of the British colonisation, and the struggle to regain independence. Bourdain also gets a rare opportunity to visit the Maasai tribe, a group of people who have stayed true to their traditional way of life. He shares insights into their customs, food, dance, and even joins in a ceremonial dance.

In the heart of the savannah, Bourdain learns about the fascinating and sometimes-dangerous animal conservation efforts and the impact of poaching in Africa. He also spends time with the orphaned elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and the incredible work the trust does in rehabilitating and returning these animals to the wild. He gets an up-close experience with the elephants, an activity which he clearly relishes.

Kenya's alluring coast brings a relaxed mood to the show. Bourdain explores the influences that have shaped the Swahili culture of the coastline and visits a village where he learns about the ancient Swahili way of life. He attends a traditional wedding and also learns the art of dhow-building, which as he describes it, is a significant aspect of the Swahili culture.

Food being one of the primary reasons for his travels, Bourdain indulges in the unique Kenyan cuisine with ever-present enthusiasm and curiosity. He visits a place where they serve roasted goat and a plethora of vegetables with Ugali, a glorious staple food of Kenya. He also visits a fishing village and tastes the locally caught fish, and sees how the fishermen catch fish out at sea with no modern equipment.

In between the experiences, Bourdain explores the nightlife of Nairobi, visiting clubs and bars while showcasing the city's vibrant nightlife. He even visits a Karaoke bar and surprisingly holds the microphone for a performance.

As with every episode of Parts Unknown, the show does a remarkable job of not only highlighting the country's cuisine but also showcases its people and history. Bourdain’s enthusiasm and curiosity shine in every scene as he immerses himself in every aspect of the Kenyan culture. The Kenya episode of Parts Unknown is truly a treat for the senses.
