After surviving the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime and his companions travel to the coast to investigate a mysterious underwater city. In episode 5 of Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest season 2, titled "Memories from the Bottom of the Sea," the group discovers that the city is inhabited by a new race of aquatic creatures.
As they dive down to the sunken city, the team encounters a beautiful mermaid named Myu. She tells them that the city, known as the abyssal city of Melusine, was once home to a powerful civilization. However, it was destroyed by a terrible catastrophe, leaving behind ruins and a handful of surviving sea creatures.
As they explore the ruins, Hajime and his companions come across a submerged library full of ancient books and artifacts. During their investigation, they discover a secret message hidden within a book that leads them to a hidden chamber. Inside, they find a mysterious artifact that looks like a crystal ball. When they touch it, they are transported into the memories of the sea creatures who once lived in the city.
Through these memories, the group witnesses the tragic history of the abyssal city of Melusine. They learn that the city was destroyed by a powerful magic artifact known as the "Rainbow Gemstone," which was wielded by the selfish king of the neighboring human kingdom. The merfolk of the city begged him not to use it, but he ignored their pleas, causing the gemstone to unleash a powerful wave that destroyed the city and killed everyone.
As they watch the memories unfold, Hajime and his companions also learn that the king who caused the destruction of Melusine is still alive and plotting a new attack on the sea creatures. With this knowledge, they realize that they must stop him from causing further harm.
Filled with regret and sadness, the group decides to leave the city and continue their journey, but not before they say goodbye to Myu, who joins them on their quest. As they prepare to depart, Hajime and his companions take one last look at the ruins of Melusine, vowing to protect the memories of those who once lived there.
"Memories from the Bottom of the Sea" is a poignant episode that explores themes of loss, regret, and the power of memories. With beautiful underwater scenes and emotional storytelling, it's a standout entry in Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest season 2.
