As The World Turns story centers around its sister show, The Guiding Light. The show is based in a fictional town called Oakdale,Illinois, where the lives of its inhabitants are the focus of each show. The creator of this fictional world is Irna Phillips, one of the foremost writers, and creators of soap opera on the radio, which is where the world of the soap opera began. Her vision became a television show and it took off, changing the way daytime television is viewed. The shows main stars are Terri Conn, Maura West, and Michael Park. It is the second longest running daytime soap opera, only surpassed by its sister show, The Guiding light.
