Ep 16. Water Filter; Bathroom Caulking
- April 20, 2019
In season 17 episode 16 of Ask This Old House, the team focuses on two important home maintenance tasks: installing a water filter and re-caulking a bathroom.
First, host Kevin O'Connor visits a homeowner who is concerned about the quality of her tap water. Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey explains how to install an under-sink water filter to remove contaminants and improve taste. Richard starts by shutting off the water supply and disconnecting the cold water line. He then installs a filter system using a bracket, wrench, and compression fittings. Once the filter is in place, he turns on the water supply to flush out any air or debris. Finally, Richard tests the water for flow and taste, and the homeowner is thrilled with the results.
Next, Kevin joins general contractor Tom Silva to tackle a common bathroom maintenance issue: old or damaged caulk around the tub or shower. Tom explains why caulk is important for preventing water damage and mold growth, and demonstrates how to remove old caulk using a combination of a putty knife, scraper, and caulk remover tool. After the old caulk is removed, Tom shows how to clean and dry the area before applying new caulk using a caulking gun and smoothing tool. Tom reminds viewers to use a caulk with mildew-resistant properties and to let the caulk cure before using the shower.
In addition to these two main segments, the episode also features a viewer question about repairing chipped concrete steps. Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada suggests using a patching compound to fill in the damaged areas, and offers tips on how to get a smooth finish.
Throughout the episode, the Ask This Old House team emphasizes the importance of regular home maintenance and offers practical advice for homeowners to tackle common issues themselves. With their expertise and friendly demeanor, they make even the most intimidating tasks seem doable.
