Ask This Old House Season 6 Episode 20 PVC Soccer Goal; Stilts; Sandbox

  • February 14, 2008

In season 6 episode 20 of Ask This Old House, the team tackles three different projects that are perfect for outdoor fun. First up is a project for the soccer enthusiasts - a PVC soccer goal. Host Kevin O'Connor and general contractor Tom Silva head to a local soccer field to take measurements and gather materials. Back in the workshop, Tom shows Kevin how to assemble the PVC pipes and fittings to create a durable and sturdy goal that can be easily disassembled and stored away during the off-season. The duo also offers tips on how to properly anchor the goal to the ground to prevent it from tipping over during intense games.

Next, Kevin and electrician Scott Caron meet up with a couple who want to create a unique and fun feature for their backyard - a set of stilts. Scott explains the electrical work involved in installing a GFCI outlet near the desired location for the stilts, while Kevin works on constructing the stilts using wooden boards and dowels. Once finished, the couple tries their hand at walking on the stilts with the help of Kevin and Scott.

Finally, landscape contractor Roger Cook helps a family build a sandbox for their children. Roger suggests the family choose a location in their yard that is away from overhanging trees and other obstructions, and then they start digging. After the hole is dug, Roger lines it with landscape fabric and then fills it with sand. He shows the family how to properly level and grade the sand to ensure it is safe for playing in. Lastly, Kevin and Roger construct a simple wooden cover for the sandbox to keep out rainwater and animals.

Throughout the episode, the Ask This Old House team provides viewers with detailed instructions and helpful tips for each project that will enable them to tackle similar projects in their own backyards. From the sturdy PVC soccer goal to the fun and unique stilts and safe sandbox, this episode offers a range of ideas for creating a fun and functional outdoor space.
