He is struggling with his addiction to alcohol and painkillers, and his father visits him and tells him that he has a brother he never knew about. Backstrom's team also expresses their concern about his erratic behavior, but he brushes it off and continues to work on the case.

Back at the precinct, Backstrom and his team receive a video message from someone claiming to have witnessed the hit-and-run. They track down the person who sent the message and find out that it is Bella's best friend, who had a falling out with her. She tells them that Bella was killed by a guy named Tim, who was also at the cabin party.

Backstrom and his team track down Tim and bring him in for questioning. He denies any involvement in the hit-and-run, but later admits to being at the party and driving drunk. He says that he hit a deer on his way home but didn't see Bella. Backstrom and his team then discover that the car used in the hit-and-run was actually owned by Tim's father.

In the end, Backstrom and his team build a case against Tim and his father for the hit-and-run. Bella's killer is brought to justice, but Backstrom's personal struggles continue.
