  • June 6, 2012

In the second episode of Best Sandwich in America season 1, host Adam Richman explores the Gulf Coast region to find the best sandwiches this area has to offer. With its unique blend of Southern and coastal influences, the Gulf Coast proves to be a diverse and delicious destination for sandwich lovers.

Richman starts his journey in New Orleans, where he samples the famous Muffuletta sandwich at Central Grocery. This massive sandwich boasts layers of meats, cheese, and olive salad, all stacked high on a sesame seed bun. Richman is blown away by the flavor and texture of this classic sandwich, which has been a staple in New Orleans since the early 1900s.

Next, Richman heads to Alabama to try a local favorite - the Oyster Po' Boy. He visits Wintzell's Oyster House in Mobile, where he orders the Po' Boy stuffed with fried oysters and served on a fresh French baguette. Richman is impressed by the crispy breading on the oysters and the tangy sauce that ties the sandwich together.

In Mississippi, Richman visits a small town called Ocean Springs to try a sandwich with a twist. The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint serves up a smoked brisket sandwich with pimento cheese and pickled okra, all piled onto a freshly baked bun. Richman loves the combination of smoky meat and creamy cheese, and the pickled okra adds a nice crunch and tang to the sandwich.

Richman's next stop is in Florida, where he visits Donut Hole Bakery Cafe to try their famous Croissant Breakfast Sandwich. The sandwich features bacon, eggs, and cheddar cheese all sandwiched between two layers of flaky croissant. Richman raves about the buttery, flaky texture of the croissant and the perfectly cooked eggs.

Finally, Richman heads to Texas to try a sandwich that is not for the faint of heart - the Big Texan Steak Sandwich. This behemoth of a sandwich is served at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo and features a 72-ounce steak, grilled onions, and all the fixings on a massive sub roll. Richman takes on the challenge and attempts to finish the sandwich in under an hour.

Overall, the Gulf Coast region proves to be a treasure trove of delicious and unique sandwiches. From classic favorites like the Muffuletta to new twists on old classics like the Oyster Po' Boy and Smoked Brisket with Pimento Cheese, there's something for every sandwich lover in this part of the country.
