Beyond the Boundary season 1 episode 3, "Moonlight Purple," follows the story of Akihito Kanbara, a high school student who has a unique ability to heal quickly from any injury and also turn into a youmu, a supernatural creature. Akihito has a crush on a girl named Mirai Kuriyama, who is also a Spirit World Warrior, someone who is responsible for slaying dangerous youmu creatures. Mirai is new to town and has a troubled past involving her ability to manipulate blood.
In this episode, Mirai and Akihito are contracted by a wealthy family to help find their missing daughter. The girl in question, Ai Shindou, is a friend of Mirai's and a fellow Spirit World Warrior. Mirai is hesitant to take the job, as she fears her past will come back to haunt her, but Akihito convinces her to help. The two set out to track Ai's last known location, a park where she was meeting her boyfriend.
While at the park, Mirai and Akihito encounter a youmu that is able to control plants and use them to attack its prey. The two fight the youmu, barely escaping with their lives. They quickly realize that the youmu may have been responsible for Ai's disappearance and set out to track it down.
As they search for the youmu, Mirai opens up to Akihito about her past, revealing that she accidentally killed her mother with her blood-manipulating powers. Akihito reassures her that she is not alone and that he will always be there for her.
Meanwhile, Ai's boyfriend is revealed to be working with the youmu, using Ai as bait to lure Mirai and Akihito to their death. He is shown to be a manipulative and cruel individual, willing to sacrifice Ai's life to further his own goals.
As Mirai and Akihito finally confront the youmu, they discover that it is actually an artificial creation, made from the residual emotions of people. The youmu is able to take on the appearance of Ai, using her memories to create an illusion. Mirai and Akihito work together to destroy the youmu, saving Ai's life in the process.
The episode ends with Mirai and Akihito returning Ai to her family, who are overjoyed to have their daughter back. Mirai reflects on the trust that she has formed with Akihito, knowing that he will always be there to support her. The two share a moment of friendship and understanding, solidifying their bond as Spirit World Warriors.
Overall, "Moonlight Purple" is a gripping episode that delves deeper into the characters of Mirai and Akihito. It showcases their strengths as Spirit World Warriors and their bond as friends. The episode also features intense action scenes and a compelling mystery that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat.
