Black Rat, or Kurenozumi as it was originally titled, is directed by Japanese film maker Kenta Fukasaku, son of the film maker Kinji Fukasaku of Battle Royale fame. Black Rat tells the story of a young high school bound group of friends, one of them, Asuka is kindly and sweet, a pure soul. These qualities eventually are held against her by her envious friends and they begin treating her cruelly. All of this culminates in her suicide. Sometime later all of her so called friends receive mysterious letters asking them to come to the school at dark. Upon arrival they find a strange woman wearing a black rat mask who states that she is going to kill them all as vengeance for Asuka. A blood soaked battle then ensues, with the group of friends being tracked down one by one, trying to survive and escape the school.

The story is very reminiscent of old school slasher films that rely more on atmosphere and character than purely on violence and blood to create its effects. The film was released in 2010.
