Shu is a resident of Talta Village and gifted with the ability to call upon a "shadow"-a monstrous being loyal to its owner, with his shadow taking the form and name of a blue dragon. She longs to become the apprentice of a Knight Master, especially after hearing of one visiting Talta. However, this would-be Knight Master is revealed to only be a witch, named Zola, capable of summoning her own shadow, Killer Bat. Elsewhere, Shu's first manifest of Blue Dragon is unintentional, occurring when the Grand Kingdom's soldiers attack his village. Because Blue Dragon's manifestation came from rage instead of control, Blue Dragon attacks without focus, ripping through Grand Kingdom's men and Talta Village's homes until Shu's friend Jiro manifests his own shadow, Minotaur, to calm Blue Dragon. After the chaos is averted, Zola offers Shu and Jiro the chance to come with her, helping them to better control and power their shadows as well as avoiding future attacks from the now-provoked Grand Kingdom. Shu's other friend, Kluke, decides to come along. While on their journey, Zola teaches Shu how to overcome his handicap of manifesting Blue Dragon without keeping his weak points exposed. However, a shadow user named Dolsk attacks them with his shadow, Ogre, but is soundly defeated by Jiro. Soon after the battle and Shu's training session, the adventuring party comes across a ruined city. After entering the city, the group is soon attacked by Marumaro, a resident who blames Zola's group for the ruination. However, the group evades Marumaro long enough to ensnare him in a trap and explain the situation. The group then discovers the captured residents of the city as well as minions of the villain Nene. Shortly thereafter, a pair of shadow users, Gustav and Ivanov, claim responsibility for the ruination of the city but are withdraw to report the situation to Nene. Marumaro joins Zola's team in order to stop Nene and all of his agents of evil.
