Born To Explore is a travel and adventure show that explores different cultures around the world through the eyes of a young explorer, named Richard Wiese. In season 3, episode 25, titled ‘Strange Food,’ Richard ventures to different parts of the world trying out new and unusual cuisines.
Richard’s journey begins in Cambodia, where he explores the many local markets that sell exotic and bizarre foods. He meets locals, who prepare and cook some of the strangest dishes he has ever seen, including creepy crawlies like tarantulas, scorpions, and water beetles. Richard tries his hand at catching a tarantula and watches as it’s prepared for cooking. He then takes a bite of the crunchy, fried tarantula leg, describing it as “tasting like chicken.” Richard also tries crickets and grasshoppers, which locals consider a delicacy.
Next, Richard travels to Peru, where he meets with a local family who has been farming potatoes for generations. Peru is home to thousands of different kinds of potatoes, and Richard gets to try a few of them. The family shows him how they cultivate and grow their potatoes. They also teach Richard how to make a traditional Peruvian dish called ‘Pachamanca’ which consists of packing potatoes, meat, and vegetables into a hole in the ground, covering it with hot stones, and letting it cook for hours. Richard describes it as being “incredibly flavorful.”
In Ghana, Richard meets with a local tribe called the Frafra people, who have been eating shea butter for generations. He learns about the shea nut tree which is native to West Africa and is used for everything from making soap to serving as a cooking oil. But the Frafra people also use it as food, eating shea butter mixed with pepper and salt. Richard says it tastes like a “mild buttery spread.”
Next, Richard travels to Japan, where he meets with a chef who specializes in making fermented foods. The chef takes Richard on a tour of a local market, showing him unique and unusual ingredients used in Japanese cuisine, including wasabi and fermented soybeans. Richard tastes a fermented soybean dish called natto, which is slimy with a pungent smell. Despite its appearance, Richard says that the taste was “surprisingly good.”
Finally, Richard heads to the remote island of Vanuatu, where he meets with some of the local tribes who still live traditionally. He journeys inland to learn about tribal customs and cooking. He tries a special dish called ‘Laplap,’ which is made by grating taro root and mixing it with coconut milk and meat, wrapping it in banana leaves, and cooking it in an underground oven. Richard says it was “very filling and delicious.”
In each episode of Born To Explore, Richard Wiese immerses himself in different cultures, trying out new food and experiencing new things.
