Boy Meets World Season 6 Episode 9 Poetic License: An Ode to Holden Caulfield

Cory and Shawn's English teacher, Mr. Turner, assigns the class to write an "ode to Holden Caulfield" in honor of J.D. Salinger's classic novel, The Catcher in the Rye. While Shawn struggles to come up with a poem, Cory seems to have no problem and ends up writing an impressive piece. However, when Mr. Turner announces that he'll be selecting the best poem to read at a school event, Cory's confidence is shattered because he realizes that he accidentally submitted Shawn's poem instead of his own.

Feeling guilty, Cory tries to tell Mr. Turner what happened, but Mr. Turner refuses to listen, thinking that Cory is being modest. Meanwhile, Shawn, who is oblivious to the mix-up, attends the event expecting to hear his own poem being read, but instead is surprised to hear Cory's work.

Feeling betrayed by his best friend, Shawn confronts Cory and accuses him of stealing his poem. The two argue and their friendship is put to the test. Meanwhile, Topanga is struggling to make a decision regarding her future, as she has been offered an internship in New York City but doesn't know if she should go.

Throughout the episode, several references to The Catcher in the Rye are made, with Mr. Turner even dressing up as Holden Caulfield at one point. The episode also explores themes of honesty, friendship, and the pressures of growing up and making important life decisions.
