Set in the 1960s in the impoverished Poplar district of London, the heartwarming and acclaimed British series, Call the Midwife, returns for its eighth season with another emotional episode of medical drama. In Episode 5, viewers are again immersed in the everyday lives of the midwives and nuns who work tirelessly to help women in childbirth and care for the community.

As the episode begins, Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and Dr. Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) investigate the sudden death of a local man and discover that the cause of death was tuberculosis. Concerned about the spread of the disease, the pair work quickly to prevent an outbreak by carefully monitoring the family and friends of the man who died.

Meanwhile, Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) is tasked with caring for a Ghanaian family who have recently arrived in the area. With little knowledge of their customs and traditions, Lucille soon has to adapt to their way of life, but it is only after a shocking incident that the true strength of her compassion and care is tested.

Amidst these stories of hardship, the episode once again highlights the dedication and efforts of the midwives who work day and night to support the women of Poplar. Sisters Trixie Franklin (Helen George), Valerie Dyer (Jennifer Kirby), and Magda (Nina Yndis) are called to assist with a difficult delivery, and they are reminded of the incredible resilience of the women they serve, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

As always, Call the Midwife is a powerful, emotional show that shines a light on the vital work of medical professionals and the strength and fortitude of their patients. With each episode, viewers are transported back to a time when healthcare was limited and resources were scarce, but the compassion and dedication of midwives and nurses made all the difference in the world.
