In season one, episode nine of Catfish: The TV Show, viewers are introduced to Rod and Ebony. Rod, an NYU graduate, and Ebony, a law student, have been dating online for over a year. They met on the dating app, Skout, and their relationship seemed to be going well until Ebony disappeared for several days.

Rod becomes concerned and reaches out to Nev and Max for help, suspecting that something may have happened to Ebony. Nev and Max have doubts from the start, however, when they look into Ebony's story. They find that her social media profiles are of a different person entirely, leading them to believe that Ebony may not be real.

Despite their fears and doubts, Nev and Max head to Atlanta to meet with Rod in person and try to get to the bottom of the situation. They meet with Rod at a local cafe, where he fills them in on his relationship with Ebony. He tells them that they've exchanged hundreds of messages and talked on the phone for hours, but never had the chance to meet in person.

Nev and Max decide to call Ebony's number, and to their surprise, Ebony answers the phone. However, as they begin to ask her questions about her relationship with Rod, she becomes defensive and evasive. With their suspicions only growing stronger, Nev and Max decide to confront Ebony in person.

They track Ebony down to a local park, where they finally meet her face-to-face. Ebony is visibly nervous and anxious as Nev and Max approach her, and she admits that she's been lying about her identity to Rod for months. She tells them that she created her online persona to escape from the stress of law school and to feel wanted and loved.

Rod is heartbroken and confused as Ebony explains her actions, and he struggles to come to terms with the fact that the person he's been talking to for over a year isn't who they claimed to be. However, he does eventually forgive Ebony, and the two of them part ways without any hard feelings.

The episode concludes with Nev and Max reflecting on the complexity of online relationships and the importance of being honest and open with those we care about. They emphasize that the Catfish experience is ultimately about finding love and connection, whether that be online or in person, and that the key to any successful relationship is honesty and trust.
