When a villainous force threatens to destroy Earth in the year 2166, time-traveler Rip Hunter garners an unlikely team of superheroes to try and save the day.

In the pilot episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, entitled "Pilot: Part One," viewers are introduced to the concept of time travel within the DC Universe as well as a motley crew of characters who have been hand-picked by Time Master Rip Hunter to help him save the future of the Earth.

Hunter, played by Arthur Darvill, has come from the future to the year 2016 to gather together a ragtag group of superheroes and anti-heroes. Among them are fan favorite characters from other DC shows, such as Arrow's Sara Lance/White Canary (Caity Lotz) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), as well as new additions like Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh) and Martin Stein/Firestorm (Victor Garber).

As far as Hunter is concerned, each of these individuals has a unique set of skills and abilities that will come in handy on this mission. Although many of them don't initially believe in the severity of Hunter's claims about the future, they eventually band together and agree to help.

Once they suit up in their time-traveling spaceship, the Waverider, the group travels back in time to 1975, where they hope to intercept the villainous Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) before he can do more damage to the timeline.

The episode is a fast-paced adventure from start to finish, introducing viewers to the various personalities of the members of the team and showing how they all work (or don't work) together. From the start, it's clear that this is a show that doesn't take itself too seriously; it's filled with one-liners and sarcastic quips that keep the mood light, even in the face of danger.

While the episode doesn't delve too deeply into any one character's backstory, it does give viewers a sense of who each hero is and what motivates them. For example, we see that Sara is still grappling with the death of her sister on Arrow, while Captain Cold is only interested in the mission for financial gain.

As the team travels through time to complete their goal, they encounter a number of obstacles and challenges, from a bar fight in the '70s to a run-in with a group of gangsters in the '80s. Through it all, the characters are forced to work together and rely on one another's strengths in order to stay alive and keep the timeline intact.

Some standout scenes in the episode include a fight between White Canary and some Russian baddies in an abandoned warehouse, as well as a heated confrontation between Ray Palmer and Cold that shows off both actors' ability to convey emotion and intensity.

Despite the episode's fast pace and somewhat overwhelming amount of characters, it still manages to lay the groundwork for the show's overarching plot and themes. The idea of time travel and the consequences of altering the timeline are explored in depth, and there are hints at a larger villainous force that the team will need to contend with in the future.

Overall, "Pilot: Part One" is an exciting and entertaining start to what will undoubtedly be an epic adventure for these DC heroes. With plenty of action, humor, and heart, the episode sets the stage for an equally exciting rest of the season.
