The Deadliest Catch season 4 episode 1 titled "Get 'Em Back Safe!" follows the treacherous journey of six Alaskan crab fishing vessels as they head out to the Bering Sea to catch king crab and more. The episode kicks off with Captain Andy Hillstrand of the Time Bandit talking about the unpredictability of the weather and the dangerous conditions that they will face. The Time Bandit is followed by the F/V Northwestern, captained by Sig Hansen, who talks about the importance of crew morale and unity in such difficult situations.
The first challenge for the fishermen is to navigate through the narrow channel known as False Pass, which is notorious for its treacherous rocks and strong currents. Captain Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard is the first to attempt the passage and he does so with ease, showing off his impressive skills as a captain. The other captains follow suit, with some facing more difficulties than others, but ultimately making it through unscathed.
Once out in the open sea, the crews face rough waters and fierce winds as they begin the grueling process of setting their pots. Each vessel has a quota to fill, which means they must catch as many crab as possible in the shortest amount of time. The crews work tirelessly for hours on end, battling freezing temperatures and icy deck conditions, all while trying to avoid injury.
As the episode progresses, tensions rise among some of the crews. Captain Jake Anderson of the F/V Northwestern and his crew become frustrated when they realize that the pots they have been setting are empty, which means that they're not in a good fishing spot. Captain Sig Hansen offers some words of encouragement and tells them to keep trying. Meanwhile, the Time Bandit faces a potentially catastrophic situation when their engine fails, leaving them stranded in the middle of the sea. The captains of the other vessels offer to help, but Captain Andy ultimately decides to try to fix the engine himself and miraculously succeeds.
The episode ends with the start of a fierce storm, which threatens to not only capsize the boats but also put the crew's lives at risk. The fishermen work tirelessly to secure their gear and prepare for the worst, all while praying for calm seas. As the storm rages on, it becomes clear that only the strongest and most skilled of captains and crews will be able to make it back to port safely.
Overall, "Get 'Em Back Safe!" is a thrilling and intense start to season 4 of Deadliest Catch. The episode does an excellent job of showcasing the extreme conditions that these brave fishermen face on a daily basis, as well as the camaraderie and brotherhood that forms among them. The audience is left on the edge of their seats, wondering if all of the captains and crews will make it back home alive and in one piece.
