In Deadly 60 On a Mission season 2 episode 5, Steve Backshall sets off on an adventure to Mexico, a country teeming with wildlife and natural wonders. From the Sonoran Desert to the Pacific coastline, Steve encounters some of Mexico's most iconic species and some that are rarely seen by human eyes.
Steve begins his journey in the Sonoran Desert, where he comes face to face with the venomous Gila monster, the largest lizard in North America. Steve is fascinated by the Gila monster's unique hunting technique and the fact that it is one of the only venomous lizards in the world.
Next, Steve heads to the Pacific coast, where he goes in search of the elusive humpback whale. Steve dons his scuba gear and dives into the icy waters to get an up-close look at these magnificent creatures. He observes them as they breach the surface, spout water from their blowholes, and communicate with each other using complex songs.
In the Sierra Madre Mountains, Steve meets the Mexican gray wolf, one of the rarest and most endangered canids in the world. Steve is moved by the wolves' plight and learns about the efforts being made to reintroduce them into the wild.
Steve's journey also takes him to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. Here, he encounters one of Mexico's most iconic species, the jaguar, the largest big cat in the Americas. Steve spends time with a jaguar research team, helping to track and study these powerful predators.
Throughout his journey, Steve is reminded of the importance of conservation and the need to protect these incredible animals and their habitats. As he says, "Mexico is a country of incredible richness and diversity, but it's also one of the most threatened by human activity. The animals I've seen here are amazing, and they deserve our protection."
