In Deadly 60 On a Mission season 2 episode 6, wildlife presenter Steve Backshall travels to the sunny state of Florida to explore its diverse range of animal species.
Steve starts his journey by exploring the freshwater springs that are home to a plethora of aquatic creatures. He dives deep into the crystal clear waters to search for the elusive American alligator, a deadly predator that lurks beneath the surface. As he swims, Steve encounters a number of other fascinating aquatic creatures including manatees, turtles, and even a rare species of fish that can breathe air.
Moving on from the springs, Steve heads to the swamplands of the Everglades, where he encounters some of Florida's most dangerous predators. He takes a daring leap of faith into the murky waters to come face to face with a fearsome alligator snapping turtle, one of the largest fresh water turtles in the world.
As he ventures further into the Everglades, Steve comes across a tribe of Seminole Native Americans, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. They offer Steve an insight into their traditional way of life, and take him on a hunting expedition to catch snakes, which they use both for food and as part of their spiritual practices.
Steve's journey takes a dramatic turn as he heads out to sea to search for the mighty hammerhead shark. He joins an expert shark hunter on his boat, and together they brave the rough waves to try and track down this incredible creature. As they spot the tell-tale fin breaking the surface, Steve jumps into the water with a camera as the shark approaches. The encounter is one of the most exhilarating moments in the whole series.
By the end of the episode, Steve has gained a new appreciation for the incredible diversity of wildlife that exists in this beautiful state. From the freshwater springs, to the swamplands, to the open ocean, Florida is home to a vast array of fascinating creatures that continue to amaze and inspire.
