In the season 7 premiere of Doc Martin, the picturesque village of Portwenn is in turmoil when a lifeboat tragedy occurs leaving the community shaken. The episode opens with a distraught Louise being questioned by the local authorities after her husband fails to return from the ill-fated rescue mission. She is understandably upset by his disappearance and is convinced that they are withholding information about his whereabouts.
Meanwhile, Dr. Martin Ellingham, the grumpy but brilliant physician, is struggling to adjust to married life with his wife, Louisa. He is still more comfortable in the familiar surroundings of his beloved practice, and the tension between him and Louisa is palpable as they navigate their new life together.
As he prepares to start another day at the surgery, Martin is interrupted by the arrival of a new patient, a former psychiatric patient who challenges his ability to deal with mental health issues. The patient's arrival sets off a chain of events that will test Martin's skills as a doctor and his ability to deal with sensitive situations.
Back in Portwenn, the lifeboat disaster has triggered a wave of emotion from the residents, and they are banding together to try and cope with the aftermath. Penhale, the village's bumbling constable, is tasked with leading the rescue effort, but his lack of expertise and experience has put him in a precarious situation.
As the day wears on, the tension in the village builds, and the fate of the missing lifeboat crew hangs in the balance. Can Penhale and his team find them in time? Will the arrival of the new patient lead to a breakthrough for Doc Martin, or will it be another frustrating encounter? And will Martin and Louisa be able to smooth out their differences and make their marriage work?
As always, Doc Martin delivers a mix of drama, comedy, and heart, with the stunning Cornish countryside providing a breathtaking backdrop for the events unfolding. Rescue Me is a fitting opener for a new season of this much-loved series and will leave fans eager for more.
