The Doctor and his companions arrive on the planet Chloris, known for its abundant plant life. However, they soon discover the planet is ruled by a cruel and tyrannical queen named Adrasta who hoards all the dwindling resources for herself. As they search for a way to bring justice to the people of Chloris, the Doctor is drawn to investigate reports of a mysterious creature living in a pit, which some believe to be a god.
When the Doctor and his companion Romana descend into the Pit to investigate, they discover the creature is actually a giant, tentacled monster that communicates telepathically.
