Dr. Ken is a medical-themed sitcom that follows the life of a physician named Dr. Ken Park. The main character and titular hero of the show, Dr. Ken, is played by Ken Jeong. He is a character who is in his early forties and has been working as an internist at Welltopia, a health clinic, for the last 15 years. His daily life, while dealing with sleep-depriving, unending work hours, and nagging family issues, is what this show is all about.

The pilot episode of Dr. Ken opens with a shot of Dr. Ken entering the clinic. He greets everyone along the way to his office, thereby establishing him as an all-around friendly guy. In his office, he encounters his colleagues, Damona Watkins and Dr. Julie Koshitero. The three have an argument over the proper way to care for a patient who has a headache, which drags on for some time. Meanwhile, another character named Clark, who works in the billing department, enters and tries to pitch a birthday party idea to Dr. Ken.

Shortly thereafter, the audience is introduced to Dr. Ken's family members. His wife Allison works as a therapist. They have two kids: a teenage daughter named Molly and a younger son named Dave. While Dr. Ken is busy at work, his wife attends to the kids and takes care of the house. The scene transitions to family dinner time where they discuss their day's activities.

Dr. Ken's teenage daughter, Molly, who is played by Krista Marie Yu, is established as the stereotypical socially conscious teenager who is always on her phone and is constantly taking selfies. She comes across as being aloof and disconnected from her family, but it later becomes clear that she is trying to find her place in the world. The younger son, Dave, is played by Albert Tsai, and he is portrayed as an intelligent and witty child. At the dinner table, Dave declares that he wants to be a stand-up comedian and tries to crack some jokes with his family members.

The pilot episode of Dr. Ken establishes the characters and the plot quickly, making sure that the viewer quickly understands who everyone is and what their motivations are. The episode introduces Dr. Ken's tendency towards being hardworking and dedicated to his job while showcasing that he neglects his family once in a while. Ken Jeong's comedic timing is excellent, and his character's wit and humor is the highlight of the show.

The episode continues to introduce other characters such as Damona, a tough and sassy nurse who is trying to become a doctor and Clark, who is the annoying co-worker who is always trying too hard. Meanwhile, Dr. Ken continues to see patients while struggling with the reality of his daughter growing up and moving away while also trying to enjoy his 40th birthday party celebrations.

Overall, the pilot episode of Dr. Ken is a relatable show that will resonate with people who have a busy work life and a family to take care of simultaneously. The show's great cast and excellent writing make it compelling, and the fact that it's based on Ken Jeong's own life makes it stand out from other medical sitcoms. The episode successfully establishes the themes of family, work and growing up while also remaining light-hearted and funny. Overall the episode serves as an adequate introduction to characters and themes that are explored throughout the series.
