In Family Ties season 6 episode 17, titled "Miracle in Columbus," the entire Keaton family gets into the car for a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, to attend the unveiling of Elyse's father's statue. An old acquaintance of Steven's from college is also in town, and he offers to take the family on a tour of Columbus.
As they travel, the Keatons find themselves in the middle of a snowstorm, causing them to get stuck in the middle of nowhere. They seek refuge in a small, rundown motel, and the family's holiday spirits begin to dwindle. Alex, who had planned to go skiing in Austria for the holidays, is particularly unhappy about being stranded in Ohio.
As they wait for the storm to pass, the family bonds over board games and stories, and Alex's pessimism fades away. While they are playing, the Keatons notice that a young woman is being held captive in the room next to theirs. They try to help her escape, and in the process, they discover a miraculous surprise that brings the family closer together.
Throughout the episode, the Keatons learn the true meaning of family and the importance of helping others. Even in the midst of an unexpected and unwanted detour, the Keatons realize that sometimes the greatest memories are made when things don't go according to plan.
