Forensic Files Season 7 Episode 24 The Metal Business

  • June 11, 2002

In "The Metal Business," the twenty-fourth episode of the seventh season of Forensic Files, viewers are taken on an investigation into the shocking murder of a successful California businesswoman. Jeanine Grinsell, a self-made millionaire who owned a scrap metal company, was found dead in her office, bound and gagged. Though the office was in shambles, it didn't appear that any valuables had been stolen. The police searched for any leads, but it seemed like there was no evidence at the scene that could help them solve the case.

The investigation into Jeanine's murder turned up a number of potential suspects, including her ex-husband, a man she had been romantically involved with, and even some of her own employees. But without any witnesses or physical evidence, the police struggled to find a solid lead. Eventually, they came across a piece of metal that had been found near the scene of the crime. They were able to trace the metal back to a specific supplier, who led them to a scrap yard in Arizona.

At the scrap yard, investigators found a collection of metal that had been suspiciously cleaned and packaged. The workers at the scrap yard were hesitant to provide any information, but the police were eventually able to connect the metal to a truck driver who had visited Grinsell's office on the day of the murder. The driver, Robert Parks, was quickly taken into custody.

Though Parks initially denied any involvement in the crime, forensic evidence soon revealed that he had been at Jeanine's office on the day of her murder. DNA from a cup in the office matched Parks' DNA, and his fingerprints were found on a piece of metal used to gag Jeanine. Investigators concluded that Parks had killed Jeanine during a robbery gone wrong.

In addition to DNA evidence, forensic specialists also relied on ballistics analysis to help solve the case. They discovered that the gun used to shoot Jeanine had been manufactured by a company that specialized in producing guns for police departments and military agencies. By tracking the gun's serial number, they were able to determine that it had been sold to a police department in Arizona. The police department verified that the gun had been stolen from their armory months before Jeanine's murder.

Ultimately, Parks was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The investigation into Jeanine's murder demonstrates the power of forensic science in solving even the most complex cases. Through DNA analysis, ballistics testing, and other forensic techniques, investigators were able to gather the evidence needed to bring Jeanine's killer to justice.
