Frozen Planet Season 1 Episode 106 The Last Frontier

  • April 14, 2015

Lo and behold, The Last Frontier marks the climactic episode of the first season of Frozen Planet, the breathtaking natural history documentary series that explores the polar regions of our planet. Among the chilly and often unforgiving landscapes of the north and south, we find ourselves captivated by the unique inhabitants of this realm, from the mightiest of polar bears to the tiniest of arctic foxes, from the playful penguins of Antarctica to the regal walruses of the Arctic Circle.

Throughout the season, we have seen these creatures battle the harsh elements, scavenge for food, mate and rear their young, and simply survive day to day in a world that is increasingly being impacted by climate change. In this final episode, we are taken to a place that may be the most challenging of all, a place that has been dubbed the "last frontier" by those who venture there.

We are talking about the polar regions that are farthest removed from civilization, where the ice is thickest, the temperatures are lowest, and the wildlife is often the most elusive. This means places like the High Arctic, where the summer thaw is short-lived and the winters are all-encompassing, or the deep southern oceans, where the ice shelves stretch uninterrupted for thousands of miles.

In these places, we get to witness some of the most incredible sights of the series, including the behavior of creatures that have never been captured on film before. The cameras take us through an underwater world where glaciers calve and break apart, and where krill, those tiny crustaceans that sustain the entire Antarctic ecosystem, swarm by the billions. We see how humpback whales use ingenious tricks to trap these krill, creating bubble nets that confuse their prey and send them spiraling to the surface, where the whales can scoop them up in one enormous gulp.

We also get to know some of the lesser-known inhabitants of the polar regions, such as the ivory gulls that flock to the edges of glaciers to feast on carcasses left behind by polar bears, or the peculiar-looking ribbon worms that crawl through the mud beneath the ice, seeking out unsuspecting prey. And then there are the outlandish creatures that seem to have emerged from a sci-fi movie, like the comb jellyfish that light up the dark abyss with their bioluminescent bodies, or the bristle worms that can freeze solid and then come back to life once the ice melts.

Perhaps most thrilling of all, though, is the opportunity to witness some of the rarest and most majestic species on the planet, such as the narwhal, the so-called "unicorn of the sea", whose long, spiraling tusk makes it a favorite among filmmakers and naturalists alike. We see how these creatures navigate the narrow channels that weave through the ice, using their echolocation to find breathing holes they can use to surface for air. We also see the solitary existence of the Arctic fox, whose snow-white fur helps it blend in to the landscape as it scours for lemmings and voles, or the fearsome leopard seal, which can drag unsuspecting penguins underwater for a quick meal.

Throughout The Last Frontier, we are constantly reminded of just how awe-inspiring and vulnerable these delicate ecosystems are, and how crucial it is for us to recognize our role in their continued survival. As the series comes to a close, we are left with an unshakable sense of wonder and respect for the natural world, and a newfound appreciation for the creatures that inhabit it.
