In Full Metal Alchemist season 1 episode 9, entitled "Be Thou for the People," we are introduced to an entirely new storyline and new characters. The episode opens with Edward and Alphonse arriving at a small mining town called Youswell. They are there to investigate rumors of a philosopher's stone being used to manipulate the town's inhabitants.
As they explore the town, they come across a young girl named Lyra who seems to be suffering from a mysterious illness. Lyra's father, a local doctor, tells the brothers that she has been slowly losing her ability to see over the past few months. He believes that Lyra's illness is connected to the philosopher's stone and the strange events happening in Youswell. Ed and Al are skeptical but decide to investigate further.
Their investigation leads them to discover that the town's corrupt leader, a man named Barry the Chopper, is using the philosopher's stone to control the townspeople. He has been using the stone's power to give himself and his lackeys superhuman strength and abilities, which they have used to intimidate and control the townspeople.
Ed and Al decide to confront Barry the Chopper and his men. However, during the ensuing fight, they are quickly overpowered by their opponents. Just when things seem dire, the townspeople rise up against Barry the Chopper and his men, revealing that they were never truly under his control. The townspeople were simply too scared to stand up to him without a little encouragement.
With the townspeople on their side, Ed and Al are finally able to defeat Barry the Chopper and destroy the philosopher's stone. The townspeople are grateful for the brothers' help and apologize for causing any trouble. Ed and Al, in turn, reveal that they were simply passing through and rescuing Lyra was just another part of their job.
Overall, "Be Thou for the People" is an exciting and action-packed episode that sets up a new story arc for the series. While the episode doesn't focus as much on the overarching plot of the show, it does provide another glimpse into the world of Full Metal Alchemist and the challenges that Ed and Al must face as they travel across the country in search of the philosopher's stone.
