As the title suggests, "Festival" is all about the crew of the Gargantia having some fun. It starts out with Ledo and Amy (the protagonist and his new friend, respectively) heading to the market to get some new clothing for the upcoming festivities. Ledo is initially resistant to the idea of celebrating, as he doesn't see the point in it, but Amy convinces him to come along anyway.

Once they get to the market, we get to see some of the other members of the Gargantia crew in their downtime. We learn that Bellows (the captain of the Gargantia's salvage team) is something of a gambler, and Pinion (her second-in-command) is always looking for a way to make a quick buck. We also get to see some more of the civilian residents of the ship, who are excited for the upcoming festival.

One of the highlights of the episode is a cooking competition, with Amy and Ledo teaming up to make a dish. They face some tough competition from a rival team, but manage to come out on top. This is a nice moment for the two of them, as Ledo is starting to feel more comfortable around the rest of the Gargantia crew, and Amy is happy to be able to share her love of cooking with someone else.

Another standout moment comes during the festival itself, which takes place on a giant platform in the middle of the ocean. We get to see all sorts of performances and attractions, from acrobats to musicians to a giant mechanical squid. Pinion tries to use the festival as an opportunity to make some money, but things don't quite go according to plan.

As the episode winds down, we get a sense that things aren't all fun and games for Ledo. He's still struggling to come to terms with his new situation, and is haunted by memories of his time fighting the Hideauze (the giant squid-like creatures that his Fleet is at war with). At one point, he has a tense encounter with one of the other Gargantia crew members that highlights the cultural gap between them.

Overall, "Festival" is a fun episode that gives us a chance to see more of the world of Gargantia and to get to know some of the supporting characters a bit better. While there are some hints of the larger plot (particularly in Ledo's inner turmoil), it's mostly a standalone episode that focuses on the joys of celebration.
