Set in the Cold War era, the show Get Smart follows bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart (aka Agent 86) and his competent partner, Agent 99, as they work for the secret agency CONTROL to thwart the plans of the evil organization KAOS. In season 2 episode 26 titled "Appointment in Sahara," the pair find themselves in the middle of a KAOS plot to tear apart the United States.
The episode begins with Smart and 99 receiving a cryptic letter from the desert nation of Kambezi, summoning them for a crucial meeting. Before they can board their plane, however, they are ambushed by KAOS agents disguised as airport staff. Narrowly escaping the attack, Smart and 99 soon find themselves in the midst of the Sahara Desert, where they meet their Kambezian contact, Prince Sully.
Sully reveals that KAOS operatives have infiltrated Kambezi and are producing a dangerous toxin that could potentially destroy the United States if deployed. He asks Smart and 99 to infiltrate KAOS's desert compound and destroy the toxin before it can be used. Smart eagerly agrees, but 99 points out the difficulty of the task and suggests waiting for backup. However, their communications equipment is destroyed by KAOS agents, leaving them stranded with no other options.
The two agents soon find themselves in a dangerous game of cat and mouse as they try to sneak into the heavily fortified KAOS compound. They disguise themselves as local musicians and infiltrate a party hosted by KAOS's leader, Shiraz, hoping to find evidence of the toxin's existence. However, their cover is blown when Smart's terrible trumpet playing attracts the attention of the guests. They are then captured and brought before Shiraz, who reveals that he has been expecting them.
Shiraz plans to use the toxin to eliminate the world's superpowers and create a new world order with KAOS in charge. He offers Smart and 99 a chance to join KAOS and help him achieve his vision. Smart initially pretends to go along with the offer but ends up revealing himself as a spy when he accidentally burns Shiraz's toupee with a cigarette lighter. A chaotic fight ensues, and Smart and 99 are able to destroy the toxin and escape with their lives.
As they make their way back to Kambezi, Smart and 99 are once again ambushed by KAOS agents. This time, however, they are rescued by CONTROL reinforcements, who had received a distress signal from the agents' destroyed communications equipment. The episode ends with Smart and 99 sharing a relieved laugh as they begin their journey home.
Overall, "Appointment in Sahara" is a typical episode of Get Smart, full of the show's signature mix of campy humor and tense espionage action. Smart's clumsiness leads to several hilarious mishaps, but he also shows moments of genuine ingenuity and bravery in his efforts to thwart KAOS's plans. Fans of the show will enjoy seeing the duo go up against a formidable new villain and once again triumph despite the odds stacked against them.
