In "A Family Matter," the twelfth episode of Gilmore Girls' fourth season, Lorelai and Rory find themselves in the middle of several family dramas. The episode opens with Lorelai and Sookie getting ready for Liz and T.J.'s wedding. Everything seems to be going well until Jess arrives without a suit and tie. Luke is visibly annoyed with Jess but doesn't say anything as he watches the wedding ceremony.

Meanwhile, Rory is having a bit of a crisis of her own. She's struggling to choose between two boys, Dean and Jess. She goes to Lane for advice, but Lane is distracted by her own romantic turmoil. She's just found out that her mother has started dating, and she's worried about how her strict Korean parents will react.

The episode's main conflict arises when Luke's sister, Liz, and her new husband, T.J., come to town. The couple is planning to go on a road trip for their honeymoon, and they want to leave their son, Jess, with Luke for a few weeks. Luke is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees to take Jess in.

Jess, as always, is a bit of a wild card. He's surly and temperamental, and he doesn't seem to be interested in anything Luke suggests that he do. He spends most of his time holed up in his room, and Luke is left feeling frustrated and helpless. Eventually, Jess reveals that he's been having a tough time lately. He's been kicked out of school, and he's not sure what he wants to do with his life. Luke tries to offer some advice, but it's clear that Jess isn't interested in listening.

Meanwhile, Lorelai is dealing with her own family drama. She's just found out that her parents are getting divorced, and she's struggling to process the news. She tells Rory that she's not sure how to feel about it, and Rory offers her support.

As the episode progresses, the various conflicts come to a head. Lorelai and Luke have a heart-to-heart about Jess, and Luke opens up about his own troubled relationship with his father. Rory decides to make a choice between Dean and Jess, and Lane comes to terms with her mother's new relationship.

In the end, the episode leaves several questions unresolved. Will Jess stay in Stars Hollow permanently? Will Lorelai be able to reconcile with her parents? And what will become of Rory's love life? As always, Gilmore Girls leaves its viewers eager for more.
