  • May 22, 2011

Global Voices is an informative and intriguing documentary television series that showcases different stories from around the world. The fourth season's fourth episode, Young Yakuza, follows the journey of a young man as he transitions from being a regular Japanese citizen to becoming a member of one of Japan's most notorious criminal organizations, the Yakuza.

The episode starts by introducing us to Naoki, a young and ambitious man who is eager to prove himself. Naoki is unhappy with his life, living in a small apartment and working as a truck driver. Feeling like he is going nowhere, he decides to make a drastic change and join the Yakuza.

Naoki is taken under the wing of his uncles, who are already established members of the organization. They teach him about the traditions and codes of conduct that are expected of him as a Yakuza, including respecting your seniors, never showing weakness, and always following orders. Naoki also has to prove himself by completing a series of tasks, including beating up a group of people who disrespected one of his seniors.

As the episode progresses, we get an inside look at the daily life of a Yakuza member. We see Naoki participating in traditional ceremonies, wearing the Yakuza's distinctive tattoos, and attending meetings with his fellow members. We also learn about the Yakuza's involvement in Japan's underground economy, including illegal gambling and prostitution.

The Young Yakuza episode is fascinating because it provides an unbiased look at the Yakuza, a group that is often portrayed negatively in the media. While we see the organization's seedy underbelly, we also get a glimpse of their family-like culture and deep-rooted traditions.

The episode also touches on the subject of leaving the Yakuza. Naoki is conflicted as he starts to question the moral implications of his actions as a Yakuza member. He also becomes disillusioned with the lifestyle, seeing that it isn't as glamorous as he initially imagined. He makes the difficult decision to leave the organization, risking his life in the process.

Overall, Global Voices Season 4 Episode 4: Young Yakuza, does an excellent job of showing the complexity of the Yakuza. It isn't a simple black and white issue, and the episode does well to highlight the organization's traditions, family-like culture, and the lure it has for young men like Naoki. The filmmakers also capture the dangers and moral challenges of being a Yakuza member and the struggles of leaving the organization. It is an insightful and thought-provoking look into a world that most of us will never experience.
