Jimmy Martino (played by John Stamos) is a successful restaurant owner and confirmed bachelor. But when he discovers that he has a grown-up son, Gerald (played by Josh Peck), and a granddaughter, Edie (played by Layla and Emelia Golfieri), he begins to reassess his priorities. In episode 5 of Grandfathered, titled "Edie's Two Dads," Jimmy learns that Edie's other grandfather, Dr. Ken Maisel (played by Alan Ruck), is in town for a medical conference.
At first, Jimmy is excited to meet his granddaughter's other grandparent, but his enthusiasm quickly wanes when it becomes clear that Dr. Maisel is trying to one-up him at every turn. Dr. Maisel is a wealthy doctor who lives in a mansion and drives a fancy car, while Jimmy is a self-made man who has worked hard to build his restaurant business from the ground up. Jimmy feels like he is being judged and found lacking by Dr. Maisel, and he starts to worry that he is not a good enough grandfather for Edie.
Meanwhile, Gerald is struggling with his new role as a father. He is trying to be the best dad he can be, but he is also still trying to figure out his own life. He breaks up with the mother of his child, Vanessa (played by Christina Milian), because he realizes that they are not compatible. But Vanessa is not ready to let go, and she shows up at Jimmy's restaurant to plead her case to Gerald.
Throughout the episode, Jimmy and Dr. Maisel continue to clash. They compete over who can buy Edie the best presents, who can offer the best advice, and who can spend the most time with her. But when Edie falls and hurts herself, Jimmy and Dr. Maisel are forced to work together to take care of her. They take her to the emergency room and stay by her side as she gets stitches. In this moment of crisis, Jimmy and Dr. Maisel bond over their love for Edie, and they realize that they are not so different after all.
Back at the restaurant, Gerald has a heart-to-heart with Vanessa. He tells her that he wants to be a good father to Edie, but he also needs to be true to himself. He admits that he is not ready for a serious relationship, and Vanessa agrees to let him go. They part on good terms, and Gerald resolves to focus on being the best dad he can be.
In the end, Jimmy and Dr. Maisel make peace with each other, and they both realize that they have a lot to offer Edie. Jimmy may not have a fancy car or a mansion, but he loves Edie with all his heart, and he is always there for her when she needs him. Dr. Maisel may have more money and prestige, but he also loves Edie and wants the best for her. Together, they are two dads who will do anything for their granddaughter.
