At the beginning of "Graves" season 1 episode 4, titled "That Dare Not Speak," ex-President Graves (Nick Nolte) continues his campaign for his town's mayoral race. He and his wife Margaret (Sela Ward) are determined to prove that he is still reliable and capable, despite his checkered past in office. However, things become complicated when Graves hires a new campaign manager, Samantha (Skyler Astin), who turns out to have ulterior motives for joining the team.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Miller (Skylar Gaertner), the teenage son of Graves' former political rival, Senator Artie Milller (Tuc Watkins), is having trouble fitting in at his new school. He's recruited by a group of misfits who bond over their shared love of Dungeons & Dragons, but he struggles to come to terms with his newfound nerd identity. Things come to a head when Isaiah's father catches him playing the game and makes a scene at the school, embarrassing his son in front of everyone.
As the episode progresses, Graves' campaign hits a snag when Samantha's true intentions are revealed. She is working for Graves' opponent in the mayoral race, and has been feeding him insider information about the campaign. Graves is furious and demands that Samantha be fired, but Margaret convinces him to take a more measured approach. They decide to use the information Samantha gave them to their advantage, and launch a counter-attack against their opponent.
At the same time, Isaiah begins to realize that he's not the only one going through a difficult time. He connects with his father over their shared struggles, and the two of them begin to bond over D&D. Isaiah also gains some confidence in himself, thanks to the support of his new friends. He decides to stand up to his father and declare that he doesn't care what people think of him anymore.
As the episode comes to a close, Graves and Margaret's plan works, and they gain the upper hand in the mayoral race. However, the victory is bittersweet as they realize the sacrifices they've had to make to get to this point. They both struggle with their guilt over the people they've hurt along the way, but vow to keep fighting for what they believe in.
"That Dare Not Speak" continues the trend of "Graves" season 1, blending political drama with family dysfunction. The episode highlights the complex relationships between the characters, and shows how even the most unlikely people can find common ground. While the show has its flaws, it remains an interesting exploration of power, ambition, and redemption.
