In the ninth episode of "Gu Family Book" season 1, Kang Chi’s father, Wol-ryung, is seen telling a story to his son about how he came across a girl who was being chased by goblins. He had rescued her and fallen in love with her. However, he did not realize that she was a fairy in disguise and was sent to test him. Upon finding out the truth, he had decided to leave her and return to his original form as a gumiho, so as to not bring shame to his clan.
Meanwhile, Kang Chi’s foster father, Park Mu-sol, is seen secretly meeting with Jo Gwan-woong, the main villain of the show. Jo Gwan-woong had wanted Park Mu-sol to train his army in martial arts, so as to make them superior to the king’s army. Park Mu-sol agrees, but only on the condition that Jo Gwan-woong cancels the order to kill Kang Chi.
Park Mu-sol then meets with Kang Chi and tells him that he cannot teach him any further, and that it is time for Kang Chi to leave and go explore the world on his own. Kang Chi is disappointed and hurt, and feels betrayed by his father figure. He asks Yeo-wool to leave with him, but she refuses, saying that she has to fulfill her own duty towards her family.
As Kang Chi is leaving, he stumbles upon a village that is being attacked by the same goblins that Wol-ryung had encountered years ago. With his new found control over his gumiho powers, Kang Chi fights off the goblins and saves the villagers. This win gains him their respect and admiration.
In the meanwhile, Jo Gwan-woong is seen conspiring with the Japanese, who have landed on the shores of Joseon. The Japanese offer to help Jo Gwan-woong in his quest to become the advisor to the king, in exchange for having their own way in the land.
Back at the Hundred Year Inn, Kang Chi is asked by Lady Yoon, his real mother, to leave and never return. Lady Yoon fears that if Jo Gwan-woong comes to know of Kang Chi’s true identity, he would use him to fulfill his own goals. Kang Chi is heartbroken and goes to the mountains to find solace.
However, Jo Gwan-woong’s men track him down and take him captive. They plan to use him as bait to lure Wol-ryung out of hiding, so that they can kill him. Yeo-wool comes to know of Kang Chi’s capture and sets out to save him, accompanied by the monks who had earlier trained her in martial arts.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger, as Kang Chi is held captive in a cave and Wol-ryung is seen approaching it. What will happen next? Will Kang Chi be rescued in time? Will Wol-ryung be able to save his son and continue to hide from the world, or will he reveal himself and become the target of his enemies? These are some of the questions that arise in this gripping episode of "Gu Family Book".
