Hikaru No Go is an anime series that tells the story of a young boy named Hikaru who has always been disinterested in anything that is not related to video games. However, this all changes when he finds an old Go board in his grandfather's attic.
In season 1 episode 1, titled "Eternal Rival", we are introduced to Hikaru, a young boy who doesn't seem to have any ambition in life. One day, while searching for something in his grandfather's attic, he comes across an old Go board that he decides to keep.
Hikaru is not familiar with Go, a strategic board game that originated in ancient China, but he soon discovers that the board is haunted by the spirit of a Go player named Fujiwara-no-Sai who lived in the Heian period. Sai is desperate to play Go again, and he sees Hikaru as his chance to do so.
Hikaru is reluctant to play the game at first, but Sai is able to convince him to play a game against a Go prodigy named Akira Toya. Toya is the son of a professional Go player, and he has been playing the game since he was a young child.
The game between Hikaru and Toya is intense, and it draws the attention of everyone who is present. Toya is impressed by Hikaru's ability to play the game despite having no prior knowledge of it. Despite the fact that Hikaru loses the game, he becomes determined to learn more about Go so that he can beat Toya in the future.
This episode sets the stage for the rest of the series, as Hikaru becomes more and more interested in Go and starts to develop a rivalry with Toya. Hikaru learns that there is more to life than just video games, and he discovers a passion for something that he had never even considered before.
Overall, "Eternal Rival" is a great starting point for those who are new to Hikaru No Go. It introduces the main character and sets up the plot for the series, all while providing an entertaining and tense game of Go between Hikaru and Toya.
