The show Home Movies takes us on a journey with its protagonist Brendan Small, a precocious 8-year-old who spends his time making home movies with his friends Jason and Melissa. Season 2 kicks off with an episode titled Politics.
Brendan's mother, Paula, decides to run for office as a family-values governor. Meanwhile, the kids decide to make a movie about politics. The episode opens with a shot of Paula putting up a sign in their front yard that reads "Small for Governor."
Brendan gets excited about the campaign and starts making campaign ads for his mother's campaign. He films his mom delivering a passionate speech about family values and how she wants to create a better future for kids like Brendan. Brendan is convinced that his mother's message will resonate with voters and decides to use his filmmaking skills to create an entire campaign for her.
What follows is a hilarious take on the political process as the kids try to understand the nuances of campaigning. They start by making a list of issues that matter to them, which includes more pizza in the school cafeteria, no more homework, and free video games for everyone. They then create a campaign commercial called "Vote for Paula!" which features Brendan's mother dressed in a superhero costume, complete with a cape.
While Paula's campaign ads are slick and professional, Brendan's ads are amateurish, but heartfelt. He shows people on the street what their lives would be like if they voted for his mom. The ad features people walking around with balloons and smiling all the time, as if their lives would magically become better by voting for Paula Small.
As the campaign heats up, Brendan and Melissa get into a debate about who they should vote for. Melissa believes that Paula's policies are unrealistic, and that her campaign lacks substance. Brendan becomes frustrated with Melissa's negativity and the two end up having a heated argument.
The episode gets even more entertaining when Brendan and Jason decide to run against each other for school president. They create campaign commercials to try and win votes. Brendan presents himself as the pro-pizza, pro-video games candidate, while Jason focuses on safety and homework reduction.
In the end, Paula loses her election, and Brendan loses his bid for school president, but they both learn valuable lessons about the complexities of politics. Brendan sees that the political process is more than just convincing people to vote for you, and that issues matter.
Home Movies season 2 episode 1 "Politics" is a funny and clever episode that provides a lighthearted take on the political process. The episode shows how even kids can get caught up in the excitement of campaigning and what it means to be a politician. The jokes are clever, the characters are endearing and the satire is spot on.
