Brendon and Jason are back with more filmmaking adventures in season 3 of Home Movies, and episode 11, titled "Broken Dreams," is no exception.

The episode starts with Brendon waking up in the middle of the night to find his mother, Paula, sitting on his bed. She tells him that she's been having chronic nightmares and needs his help to overcome them. Brendon, being the loving son that he is, agrees to help her by making a documentary about her dreams.

Meanwhile, Melissa is struggling with a different kind of dream. She's been practicing her singing and wants to try out for the school musical, but she's too nervous to audition. Jason, always the supportive friend, encourages her to go for it and even offers to help with her audition piece.

As Brendon gets deeper into his mom's dream world, he begins to uncover some uncomfortable truths about their family dynamic. Paula's dreams are filled with images of Brendon's absent father, Andrew, and Brendon soon realizes that his dad leaving has impacted his mother more than he ever thought. As he struggles to balance his desire to make a good film with his loyalty to his mother's psyche, Brendon finds himself in uncharted emotional territory.

Meanwhile, Melissa is having a hard time connecting with the material for the musical. She's been practicing a sappy ballad, but it's just not clicking for her. After some brainstorming with Jason (and some hilarious improv scenes), Melissa decides to take a different approach and write her own song. With Jason's help, Melissa composes a catchy tune that perfectly showcases her vocal talent and quirky personality.

As the episode winds down, the different threads come together in a satisfying conclusion. Brendon realizes that his mom needs more than just a documentary to sort through her feelings, and he has a heart-to-heart with her about their family history. Melissa's audition goes incredibly well, and she's thrilled to have taken a risk and given it her all. And Jason...well, Jason remains his charming, hilarious self throughout the entire episode, providing some much-needed comic relief.

Overall, "Broken Dreams" is a touching and funny episode that showcases the show's unique brand of humor and heart. Fans of Home Movies (and those who are discovering it for the first time) will love this episode and the rest of season 3.
