Set in the early 20th century, Masterpiece: Indian Summers is a drama series that revolves around the British ruling class in the summer capital of India, Simla. This show offers a window into the complex and dynamic relationships between the British officials and their Indian counterparts, as they navigate the turbulent political and social climate of India. In season 1's fourth episode, viewers witness the repercussions of Alice Whelan's (Jemima West) affair with Aafrin Dalal (Nikesh Patel) on the entire Whelan family.

The episode picks up with Alice's husband, Douglas (Craig Parkinson), who has returned to Simla, determined to uncover the truth behind his wife's infidelity. His investigation leads him to the Dalal household, where he confronts Aafrin and his sister Sooni (Aysha Kala). Sooni, who is a political activist, tries to persuade Douglas to support the Indian independence movement, but he is more focused on protecting his family's reputation. Empowered by the truth, Douglas confronts Alice, who finally confesses to her affair. The confrontation leads Douglas to question his own role in their failed marriage and his loyalty to the British Empire.

Meanwhile, Ralph Whelan (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), Alice's brother, is dealing with his own crisis. He is tasked with arranging a lavish party to impress the Viceroy of India, who is coming to Simla. However, the party preparations are thrown into chaos when one of the local Maharajahs, who has been invited to the party, is arrested for sedition. Ralph must navigate this delicate political situation, all while dealing with his own personal demons.

The tension between the British and Indian communities in Simla reaches a boiling point in this episode when a prominent Indian businessman is assassinated. The investigation into the murder reveals complex layers of corruption, greed, and hidden agendas. This case challenges the existing power dynamics between the British and the Indians, leading to increasing unrest and violence.

In the midst of the chaos and political turmoil, a love triangle between Alice, Aafrin, and Cynthia Coffin (Julie Walters) comes to a head. Cynthia, who has been Alice's confidante, reveals her true feelings for Aafrin, which leaves Alice feeling betrayed. As Cynthia uses her typical wit and charm to pursue Aafrin, Alice struggles to come to terms with her own emotions and desires.

Masterpiece: Indian Summers season 1 episode 4 brings together all the elements of a classic period drama - romance, politics, power struggles, and scandal. With strong performances by the ensemble cast, this episode leaves viewers eager to see how the complex relationships between the British and Indians will continue to evolve amidst the unfolding political landscape of India.
