In episode 1 of Indian Summers season 2, viewers are transported back to the sultry setting of Shimla, the picturesque summer capital of the British Empire in India. The year is 1935, and tensions are high as India moves closer to independence from British rule.

We are reacquainted with the familiar faces from season 1, including Ralph Whelan, the charming and ruthless private secretary to the Viceroy of India; Cynthia Coffin, the saucy proprietress of the Royal Simla Club; and Aafrin Dalal, the handsome and ambitious clerk at the British Government's Public Works Department.

As the episode unfolds, we see that the political situation in India has become increasingly volatile, and the simmering discontent among the Indian population is beginning to boil over. In response, the British authorities have instituted harsh measures to maintain order, including a ban on public gatherings and a curfew that is strictly enforced.

Despite the tense atmosphere, life in Shimla goes on much as it always has. The British expat community continues to socialize and drink tea, while the Indians who work for them go about their business as usual. However, there are signs that change is coming, and it is clear that no one is quite sure what the future will hold.

Meanwhile, the personal dramas that we have come to know and love from season 1 continue to unfold. Ralph is still grappling with his emotions for his former lover, Madeleine, who has returned to India with her new husband. Cynthia is scheming to expand her business empire, while Aafrin finds himself caught up in a dangerous political game that threatens his career and his family's safety.

As always, the production values of Indian Summers are top-notch, and the lush setting of Shimla is a feast for the eyes. The acting is superb, with standout performances from all the leads, especially Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Ralph and Julie Walters as Cynthia.

Overall, episode 1 of Indian Summers season 2 is a compelling start to the new season. The sense of impending change, both on a personal and political level, is palpable, and it will be fascinating to see how the characters navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
