Judge Mathis is a popular daytime television show that features cases brought before former district court judge Greg Mathis. In the show, Mathis presides over small claims court cases and gives his verdicts based on the evidence presented in court.
Season 15, Episode 7 of Judge Mathis revolves around a case filed by a woman who claims that her neighbor caused damage to her property. The plaintiff explains that she lives in a duplex and her neighbor, who rents the other unit, has been causing damages to the house by throwing parties and illegal substances are being used in his unit.
The plaintiff further narrates that her neighbor has damaged her ceiling and walls and she has already spent a considerable amount of money on repairs. The defendant, on the other hand, denies all the claims and says he is a responsible tenant who has been renting the house for over three years and has always paid his rent on time.
After listening to both the parties, Judge Mathis orders the defendant to go outside the courtroom with the attorneys to see the photos of the damages caused to the plaintiff's property. After seeing the pictures, the defendant agrees to the damages but contends that he has already paid some compensation to the plaintiff.
To verify his claims, Judge Mathis asks the defendant to present the proof of payment in court. When the defendant fails to produce any proof, the plaintiff argues that she has not received any compensation from the defendant. Mathis gives the defendant a stern warning and orders him to produce the payment proof in court otherwise, he would have to pay double the amount of damages caused to the plaintiff.
The case takes an unexpected turn when the defendant tells Judge Mathis that he had sent the money through an app, but the plaintiff's phone was not working at that time, so she could not receive the money. He also says that he put the payment in a box outside the plaintiff's house but, the box was missing when the plaintiff came back from her work.
To check his claim, Judge Mathis orders the plaintiff to show her phone to the court clerk to check if she had received any money during that time. Upon checking her phone, the court finds that the plaintiff had received the money from the defendant on the said date.
As the episode progresses, both the plaintiff and defendant take the stand to present their sides of the story. The defendant apologizes and says that he was not aware that the plaintiff had received the payment, and he is willing to pay for the damages caused. Judge Mathis listens carefully and orders the defendant to pay the entire amount of damages caused to the plaintiff, and he also advises the defendant to be more responsible and pay more attention to his actions.
In the end, the plaintiff is awarded the damages caused, and both the parties are dismissed from the court. This episode is a great example of how Judge Mathis listens attentively to both sides of the story and tries to resolve the dispute in an equitable manner.
