As the Koutetsujou makes its way towards Kongoukaku, the capital city, the passengers continue to face danger and uncertainty. Ikoma and Takumi work together to make modifications to the Kabaneri weaponry, hoping to give them an edge against the Kabane. Meanwhile, Ayame struggles with her leadership role and the weight of her responsibilities.
As they approach a tunnel leading to the city, the group encounters a group of survivors who have made a home in the underground caverns. Among them is a young girl named Mumei, who shares the same condition as the Kabaneri. Despite her age, Mumei is skilled in combat and offers to join the group in their mission.
As they continue towards Kongoukaku, tensions rise between Mumei and the others. The group's mistrust turns to fear as they hear rumors of a powerful Kabane known as the "Black Smoke" that is causing havoc in the city. Despite the risks, Ikoma and Mumei venture into the city to gather information.
Their journey takes them through crowds of terrified civilians and battles with Kabane, but they eventually make it to a meeting with Ayame's father, the shogun. There they learn more about the Black Smoke and his plans for the future of the fortress.
Back on the Koutetsujou, tensions between Mumei and the others come to a head. Mumei's past is revealed, shedding light on the reasons for her defensiveness and hesitation to trust. Ultimately, the group comes to a compromise and moves forward with their mission.
As they reach the city, they are met with a horrifying sight. The Black Smoke has arrived, more powerful and dangerous than they ever imagined. In a frantic battle, the group fights to survive and protect the people of Kongoukaku.
"Gathering Light" showcases the continued growth and development of the characters as they face new challenges and obstacles. It highlights the importance of trust and communication, even in the most dire of situations. The episode sets the stage for an intense and action-packed finale to the first season of the series.
