La Reina del Sur is a Spanish-language telenovela that revolves around the life of Teresa Mendoza. The journey to Spain is a harrowing one, as they board a small plane that is flown by a reckless pilot. Teresa and Guero are both terrified, but they arrive safely in Spain.
Once they arrive, Teresa and Guero are taken to a house by a man named Santiago Fisterra. Santiago is the contact person in Spain for Guero's drug trafficking ring, and he becomes an important figure in Teresa's life.

Despite their best efforts to stay under the radar, Teresa and Guero are soon discovered by the police. They are forced to flee and go into hiding. Teresa is left alone in a strange country, with no money, no friends, and no knowledge of the language.
Despite the dire situation she finds herself in, Teresa refuses to give up. She is determined to survive and make a life for herself in Spain. Episode 1 ends with Teresa walking through the bustling streets of Madrid, a look of determination on her face.
