In Law & Order: Criminal Intent season 1 episode 16 titled "Phantom," Goren and Eames investigate a string of murders that lead them to a wealthy businessman named Carl Atwood. The victims all appear to have connections to Atwood, and each murder is committed in a similar fashion.

As Goren and Eames delve deeper into the case, they discover that Atwood has a history of violence and had previously been accused of the same type of murders that are currently taking place. However, the case against him fell apart due to lack of evidence.

Atwood, who is also a master manipulator, begins to play mind games with Goren and Eames, making it difficult for them to get a solid case against him. At the same time, Atwood's wife, who is also his business partner, is becoming increasingly suspicious of her husband's behavior.

Throughout the episode, Goren struggles to keep his personal feelings about the case in check. It becomes evident that he has a personal stake in solving the case due to his own family issues.

As Goren and Eames gather more evidence, Atwood becomes more desperate and resorts to extreme measures to cover his tracks. The detectives must work quickly to untangle the web of lies and deceit that Atwood has created before he can strike again.

The episode is full of suspense and unexpected twists, and the audience is left on the edge of their seats as the detectives race against the clock to catch the killer. Will they be able to solve the case before Atwood can claim another victim?
