Each one has their unique approach to survival, but they all agree that Alaska's harsh climate provides them with a rare opportunity to live a life of freedom, independence, and self-reliance.

The episode features Sue Aikens, a remarkable woman who runs the Kavik River Camp, a remote outpost that serves as a stopover for pilots, miners and other adventurers visiting Alaska's North Slope. Her tenacity and resilience have made her one of the most iconic personalities of the show.

Next, we meet Ricko DeWilde, a Gwich'in Athabascan trapper who lives in the Yukon Flats with his family. Ricko's ancestors have been living off the land for thousands of years, and he has inherited that same lifelong commitment to hunting, fishing and trapping. Together, they run an off-the-grid hunting and guiding business for visitors who flock to Alaska for the experience of living in the wild. Eric's expertise in hunting and tracking is critical for ensuring that his clients have a successful trip, but the harsh climate and unpredictable animals make every excursion a risky one.

Last but not least, the episode features a newcomer to the show, the Hailstone family. Chip, Agnes, and their seven children live in Noorvik, a remote village in Northern Alaska. The Hailstones are Inupiaq Eskimos and have been living off the land for generations. They rely heavily on their traditional hunting and fishing methods to provide for their family, including their seven children. Agnes is widely respected for her many skills, including sewing fur clothing and making mukluks, traditional boots made from animal hide. The Hailstone family's dedication to their culture and their way of life is heartening to see.
