As the Roloff family grows and changes on their beloved farm in Oregon, season 24 episode 7 of Little People, Big World, entitled "This Is a Problem in Our Marriage," examines some of the struggles faced by longtime couple Matt and Amy Roloff.
As the episode begins, Matt and Amy open up about their ongoing marital issues, which have been compounded by the recent transition of the family pumpkin farm. Despite working side by side for over 30 years, the couple now find themselves at odds over how much involvement each should have in the farm's operations. Amy feels like she's been pushed out of the decision-making process, while Matt believes that he's merely taking the lead on a project that has always been his baby.
The Roloffs decide to sit down with a therapist to unpack their communication issues and come up with a plan for moving forward. As they delve deeper into their history, Amy reveals that she often felt like she was playing "second fiddle" to Matt in their early years of marriage, as she was more focused on raising their children while he was dedicating himself to the farm. Matt, meanwhile, admits that he can be dismissive of Amy's opinions, which he attributes to his fiercely independent nature.
Despite these challenges, the couple remains committed to improving their relationship and saving their marriage. With the support of the therapist, they work on better communication strategies and start to figure out how they can both play important roles in the success of the pumpkin farm.
Meanwhile, their children also face their own challenges. Zach and Tori worry about their young son Jackson's speech delay and take him to see a speech therapist. As they learn about exercises they can do with him at home, the couple reflects on their own experiences with bullying and how they don't want Jackson to feel left out because of his differences.
Later, Zach takes Jackson to the doctor for a check-up and learns that he will need a minor surgery to have his adenoids removed, which could hopefully improve his breathing and alleviate some of his speech troubles. The news is difficult for Tori, who confesses that she's always nervous about Jackson going under anesthesia.
Back on the farm, newlyweds Jeremy and Audrey continue to juggle their growing business, Ember & Co., with their roles as parents to daughter Ember. They're working on a new product launch, which has them running all over town to source materials and shoot promotional videos. With Audrey's sister helping out, the couple enjoy a brief reprieve from their usual chaotic schedule.
Finally, the episode ends with an emotional scene as Matt and Amy briefly reminisce about their early days on the farm, before acknowledging that they're both different people now than they were back then. Nonetheless, they embrace their shared love for their family and the farm, and vow to keep working on their relationship.
In "This Is a Problem in Our Marriage," Little People, Big World offers a candid and heartfelt look at the ups and downs of one of the show's most beloved couples, as well as the challenges faced by the next generation of Roloffs as they navigate parenthood and entrepreneurship. It's a reminder that despite the family's unique obstacles, they're just like any other family, trying their best to love and support one another through life's many twists and turns.
