  • February 6, 1937

Looney Tunes is a classic American animated sitcom that premiered on April 19, 1930. The show, featuring popular characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, became an instant hit. It ran for 1039 episodes, concluding on October 20, 1969. This show is a treasure trove of humor, slapstick, and satire that continues to entertain children and adults.

The fourth episode of the 1937 season of Looney Tunes is titled "Porky's Road Race." In this episode, we see Porky Pig, the stuttering pig, participate in a road race, organized by Weasel O'Neil. Weasel O'Neil is a shady character who seems to be running the race only to make some quick bucks. He is the organizer, commentator, and the racer all rolled into one.

The race takes place in a hilly terrain, with many dangerous twists and turns. Porky, with his trusty car, sets out to win the race. His car, however, has seen better days. It's old, rickety and barely holding together. The other competitors like Cool Cat, Bunny, and The Rooster have much better cars that look like they were custom-built for the race.

As the race begins, Porky's car starts to break down and he quickly falls behind. To make matters worse, he also experiences some trouble with the wheels that come loose, and then fall off completely. The other racers can't help but laugh at him as they whizz past. But Porky is determined to complete the race, and so he uses a spare tire to move his car ahead.

The race gets more perilous by the minute, with racers driving off cliffs, crashing into each other, and generally going haywire. Weasel O'Neil is always on the lookout for ways to make some extra cash and is not beyond cheating to get ahead. He frequently uses dirty tricks like throwing tacks on the road, cutting corners, and sabotaging other racers. However, he always gets his comeuppance, with his schemes backfiring and causing him to fall behind.

Porky's mishaps continue, with his car also losing its brakes, leaving him careening down hills until he's able to come to a stop. But he's undeterred and determined to finish the race. Meanwhile, the other racers aren't faring much better despite their more advanced cars. They're all crashing and bickering amongst themselves.

As the race draws to a close, Porky manages to catch up to the others. But just when he thinks he has a chance of winning, his car gives out, leaving him stranded. Despondent, he pulls out his famous "That's All Folks" sign and resigns himself to defeat.

In the end, however, Porky turns out to be the real winner. He's awarded the prize money after it's revealed that all the other racers had been caught up in Weasel O'Neil's shenanigans, which led to their disqualification. Porky, who never gave up, is hailed as the true champion.

Overall, "Porky's Road Race" is a hilarious episode that showcases the classic Looney Tunes humor. It's full of slapstick, mishaps, and improbable scenarios that keep the audience entertained from start to finish. Despite being almost 100 years old, the show still holds up and continues to entertain viewers of all ages. Looney Tunes is truly a timeless classic that has earned its place in the pantheon of American pop culture.
