- September 28, 1946
In the twentieth episode of the Looney Tunes season of 1946, titled "Fair and Worm-er," we witness the classic rivalry between a clever predator and his potentially-delicious prey. The episode features the iconic duo of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, who have now been enlisted as park rangers to protect the national park's garden from the greedy and uninvited advances of a worm called Jim.
It all begins when the animals of the park are shown to be living in harmony, with Daffy making his rounds as always, the snails sleeping peacefully, and even the caterpillars enjoying their food. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse as a giant worm, Jim, frees himself from his underground abode and makes his way to the bountiful garden. Jim seems to have a bottomless appetite and so he consumes everything in sight, including Bugs Bunny's carrots!
Bugs soon finds a way to seek revenge by concocting a plan to stop the hungry worm from ruining the beautiful park grounds. Together with Daffy, Bugs begins to set traps and blockades in the garden to stop Jim's access, but the worm proves to be far more intelligent than they had expected. As the duo try to trick, chase, and catch Jim, the worm retaliates with his tricks and disguises, leaving the rangers baffled by his wit.
Despite all of their efforts, Jim, the worm, manages to outsmart the duo on multiple occasions and continues to wreak havoc in the garden. The frustrated rangers then embark on a wild goose chase with Jim, finally ending up in a battle of wits at the fairgrounds. Here, Jim has brilliantly disguised himself as a beauty pageant judge, and Bugs even dons a dress in an attempt to catch him.
In the end, it's a classic game of whack-a-mole that leads to a surprising twist, as Jim is finally caught getting his sweet revenge on a slew of other moles. The two rangers are left exhausted and exasperated, but still manage to keep the park grounds safe from any more harm.
Overall, "Fair and Worm-er" is a thrilling episode filled with humor and suspense that keeps the audience engaged. The creativity and ingenuity in the animation and sketches are top-notch, proving once again why Looney Tunes has stood the test of time as an iconic cartoon franchise.
